Aquatic Specialist

The Y is a dynamic and diverse human service organization committed to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility.

1. Provides supervision of the pool deck area, entrances, and high risk/traffic areas
2. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required
3. Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff
4. Answer member questions and provide assistance
5. Assist staff in handling any situations that may occur on the pool deck
6. Trained in the emergency action plan and the role they play
7. Attends all staff meetings and training as required
8. Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practices
9. Performs and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associated with COVID-19 prevention
10. Assist in all areas as assigned and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor

• Must be a Lifeguard III if not a YMCA lifeguard, must obtain YMCA certification in 180 days from hire
• Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council).  Any BLS certification is only good for one year
• Must obtain YMCA Swim Lesson instructor within 60 days of hire
• Must obtain Aquatic Facility Operator within 30 days of hire
• Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness
• Must demonstrate lifeguard, instruction and pool operation skills in accordance with YMCA standards
• Maintain all required certifications and trainings 
• Minimum age of 18

1. Ability to pass lifeguard water test
2. Must be able to remain alert
3. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods
4. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
5. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
6. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue
7. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and 
8. loud situations
9. Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions)
10. Must be able to lift and pull 50 pounds
