Job Title:Equestrian Coordinator                    

Department:Camp Ohiyesa

FLSA Status:Stipend

Status:Seasonal

Reports to:Program Director

 

 

 

 

 

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Equestrian Director is responsible for development and implementation of the camp Horseback Riding program, including planning and teaching age appropriate lessons, safety of all participants, supervision of horseback staff, care of horses, and participation in special camp programs.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Plan, develop, and instruct the total Camp Horseback Program centered on children becoming comfortable with horses, successful with their horseback riding experiences, and knowledgeable in proper care of horses and equipment.
  2. Set and enforce rules in use and treatment of horses in the Horseback Riding Program.
  3. Maintain excellent safety practices, which protect the welfare of all Horseback Riding participants.
  4. Maintain standards set by the American Camping Association for equestrian programs.
  5. Care for and feed the horses.
  6. Supervise the performance of the Horseback Riding staff.
  7. Attend all staff training, meetings, and workdays and follow all requirements of the position as stated in work rules and regulations.
  8. Coordinate program with other camp activities.
  9. Train staff during training week in general riding skills and horse safety.
  10. Consciously create an atmosphere in camp that fosters the goals and objectives of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit.
  11. Carry out other duties as deemed necessary by the Camp Director to assure a successful program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Must have at least 2 years experience in all aspects of riding and caring for horses, and riding safety.
  3. Should have experience teaching riding lessons to children or working with children in another capacity.
  4. Should have general understanding of the YMCA and the goals and objectives of YMCA camping.
  5. Must possess a desire to work with children and to help them learn and be successful.
  6. Must possess or be willing to obtain current First Aid and CPR certifications.

  • Ability to stand, sit (including on the ground), and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in all physical activities
  • Ability to sit and stand from a seated position (including from the ground) when interacting with children.
  • Capability to be actively engaging with youth outdoors for the majority of the day.
