The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Compensation Manager in Dallas, Texas and is responsible for supporting the leaders and Human Resources staff located at the Texas Divisional Headquarters office, as well as the local offices throughout the State of Texas, with approximately 1,500 employees.

Job Summary

This Compensation Manager role is a valued resource for our minister leaders and local Human Resource teams needing assistance in defining jobs and making compensation decisions in a manner that meets our mission-focused staffing needs.  This role partners with our Territorial Headquarters Compensation Director to enhance the design and day-to-day administration of the Division’s compensation administration.  On a day-to-day basis, this role provides guidance for the proper classification of work as well as compensation practices for new hires and position changes. This role serves as the Project Leader for the Annual Performance and Compensation Review Process and is a Trainer in compensation best practices.  


This role is best-suited for a compensation professional interested in impacting the local community needs served by The Salvation Army.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the modern principles and practices of human resources management and specifically compensation administration and performance management systems.  Knowledge of the principles and practices of general business administration.  Ability to apply independent judgment in making decisions and resolving problems with limited supervision.  Ability to objectively evaluate positions utilizing market data and internal job evaluation tool.  Ability to write accurate and thorough job descriptions to capture to full scope and level of work involved in a particular job.  Ability to create a variety of analytical reports and the presentation of data using Excel including the ability to effectively use mathematical formulas required for compensation calculations and analysis.  Ability to interpret and enforce established policies and procedures regarding compensation administration in order to maintain consistency in pay practices.  Ability to prepare and conduct informative presentations regarding current and proposed pay practices.  Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with Divisional Headquarters Department Heads and Command level Leaders and Human Resources Staff.  Ability to effectively interview employees and management to identify critical job-related information relevant to developing an accurate job description and fair and competitive pay range.  Ability to serve as technical resource for compensation management best practices and decisions.


Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Human Resources Management, or a closely related field AND Five years’ progressively responsible human resources work experience is required with demonstration of job analysis and job description writing skills, and compensation administration, analysis and reporting OR  Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Licenses and Certifications

Valid State Driver’s License

Certified Compensation Professional (preferred)


Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Ability to meet attendance requirements.  Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in the English language.  Ability to perform both routine and complex mathematical calculations.  Ability to type and operate a personal computer.  Ability to perform all duties with an understanding of the mission, ministry, philosophy, culture, and protocol of The Salvation Army and conducts all duties in accordance with the ministry of the organization and its Christian principles; conducts all communications and job duties with the highest level of professionalism.  Ability to travel within the State of Texas as needed to conduct on-site job evaluations.   Duties are usually performed seated.  Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.  Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.).


Work is usually performed in a normal office environment and involves some travel where there can be physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
