The Salvation Army, Potomac Division an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, with locations in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, DC has a job opening for a at its Divisional Auditor at Divisional Headquarters, in Washington, DC.

 

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Divisional Finance Manager, the Divisional Auditor and review internal audits of Commands located throughout the Potomac Division. The Potomac Division is comprised of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, DC and includes 56 Commands/Corps operations The incumbent audits to discover weakness in accounting systems and possible fraud; audits books and reconciles accounts to determine compliance with established Salvation Army accounting and bookkeeping policies and procedures and to determine financial status; prepares reports and provides recommendations to improve accounting and bookkeeping methods, practices, and procedures.

Audit Projects: (70%)

Conducts and reviews internal audits located throughout the Division on behalf of The Salvation Army to discover weakness in accounting systems and possible fraud; audits books and reconciles accounts to determine compliance with established Salvation Army accounting and bookkeeping policies and procedures and to determine financial status; prepares reports and provides recommendations to improve accounting and bookkeeping methods, practices, and procedures. Reviews audit findings with the Commanding Officer and the Divisional Finance Manager, Divisional Finance Director, or Divisional Business Secretary and informs them of any mishandling, misrepresentation or misappropriation of funds, statistics, or general data discovered through internal audits.  Ensures completeness of audit findings/reports in the Audit software program. 

 

Audit Planning: (5%)

 

Works with the Supervisor to develop an annual audit plan by assessing, planning, scoping and scheduling internal audits within the Division. Coaches the field staff by providing guidance on financial record keeping, recording and financial analysis. Reviews financial statements and reports to ensure they reflect the company’s financial position accurately and that accepted accounting practices are followed.  Reviews work papers, prepares audit reports of findings, and makes recommendations to the Divisional Administration of recommended improvements to accounting practices and financial statements.


Consolidation Reviews: (15%)

Reviews and inspects financial reports and records to ensure accuracy and completeness as well as compliance with rules and regulations governing the same; traces income to ledger and bank statements and reviews and analyzes receipts; reviews and analyzes disbursements and traces checks to ledger; reviews questionable items and problems areas with appropriate personnel; determines if and where fraud exists. Conducts special audits of situations or functions with the organization when deficiencies are identified by management and remedial actions are required to protect assets or improve the organizational performance.


Other Responsibilities (5%):

Trains accounting staff in the preparation of financial records and reports; travels throughout the division to meet with accounting staff; ensures compliance with all Salvation Army policies and procedures. Reviews and analyzes Corps budgets as requested. Performs special projects as requested and performs other related work as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

Knowledge of The Salvation Army mission and philosophy. Knowledge of Salvation Army policies, practices and procedures relating to accounting and financial reporting. Knowledge of the parameters of Salvation Army expenditures as set forth in the official minute book. Knowledge of audit statement preparation for non-profit organizations. Knowledge of the use, operation, and capabilities of computer systems. Knowledge of the general principles and practices of mathematics, accounting, bookkeeping and finance. Ability to conduct thorough internal audits and to prepare and maintains accurate and complete reports in a timely manner. Ability to prepare accurate financial statements and to reconcile accounts. Ability to recognize the mishandling and/or misappropriation of funds. Ability to apply discretion and independent judgement with limited supervision. Ability to discern the capabilities or deficiencies of accounting and bookkeeping personnel in the units being audited. Ability to counsel Salvation Army personnel in their discharge of duties relating to business, finance, and accounting. Ability to discharge the duties and responsibilities of this position consistent with the principles, standards, and Orders and Regulations of The Salvation Army. Ability to conduct the affairs of this office responsibly, efficiently, and economically, and to motivate the staff to do likewise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:


Education and Experience

 

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, and one year experience performing accounting, bookkeeping, or auditing work of which at least two years must be in a supervisory capacity or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Certifications/Licenses:  

Valid Driver's License (preferred). 

 

Physical Requirements:  

Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations. Ability to exert mental/visual effort required for sustained periods of concentration, working under the pressure of deadlines, and continual interruptions in concentration from staff requiring assistance. Ability to travel throughout the Division for extended overnight trips frequently in order to conduct responsibilities of the position. Ability to operate Salvation Army vehicle as it relates to job-specific travel. Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.


Working Conditions 

Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
