The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Housing Assistant for the Coastal Alabama Area Command located in Mobile, Alabama.
Accepts and processes residents staying in the Family Haven Shelter and completes assigned documentation for intake and discharge of residents. Monitors the activity of residents on an assigned shift ensuring safety, security and compliance to house rules. Transports residents as needed. Answers telephone and responds to questions regarding the lodge/shelter operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of general office procedures and practices. Knowledge of safety precautions associated with transporting passengers. Ability to communicate effectively with residents to control, lead, and motivate behavior. Ability to work with the public encompassing all types of behaviors. Ability to work independently and with limited supervision while enforcing established policies and procedures. Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and calmly while maintaining control and initiating the proper corrective action. Ability to perform combinations of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis. Ability to operate a motor vehicle to transport residents of the program to various appointments and locations.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or G.E.D. and one-year experience performing security or social service work preferred and two years’ experience operating an automotive vehicle or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications
First Aid and C.P.R. Certification (will train if needed)
Valid State Driver’s License.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Work is performed in a lodge/shelter facility where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. Work involves driving a vehicle where there may be physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with long distance trips or heavy traffic. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time.
