Upward Bound Director
The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has an opening for an Upward Bound Math & Science Director for the Houston Area Command, located in Houston, Texas.
Manages and administers a federally funded TRIO program that provides direct services to participants; supervises the implementation of project goals and objectives; administers project budget, development, coordination, implementation, supervision and evaluation of the Academic and Summer Components.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of academic, economic, social, and cultural needs of disadvantaged youth. Knowledge of the college admissions and financial aid process. Knowledge and technical understanding of computer software, hardware, and presentation equipment. Skill in strong listening, verbal, writing, communications and marketing functions. Skill in strong planning and organizational functions. Ability to assess academic needs and evaluate students in an academic setting by developing individual Service Plans. Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army. Ability to display sensitivity to the educational and psychological issues affecting low-income, potential first-generation college-bound youth and indicate either professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the target population.
Education and Experience
Master’s degree in education, counseling, public administration, or related field And A minimum of Five years of experience managing TRIO or similar projects; Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred; preference will be given to individuals with similar backgrounds as UBMS participants. Certifications: Valid State Drivers License. CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within established timeframe)
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language effectively. Ability to perform routine mathematical computations. Ability to operate various general office equipment including a telephone, computer, etc. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with constant breaks in concentration associated with answering phones. Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time. Working Conditions: Work is usually performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like, but not limited to the office environment.
