Sorting Room Worker
The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Part-Time Sorting Room Worker for the Port Saint Lucie Thrift Store located in St. Lucie, FL.
POSITION SUMMARY: Receives, sorts, prices and prepares donated items for display in the store; determines suitability and pricing of items based on established standards; assists in maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the warehouse area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This position description should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the major responsibilities and requirements of this position. The incumbents may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this position description. Receives, inspects and sorts donated items such as clothes, shoes, household items, bric-a-brac, etc. according to the category and condition. Selects items suitable for store display and distributes same to appropriate area for further sorting and/or pricing; discards items in accordance with established procedures. Tags items with specially coded tickets and/or prices in accordance with established procedures. Packs items in boxes and marks boxes accordingly; assists in transporting boxes to appropriate storage area. Lifts and carries items to the appropriate destination for further processing, storage or displaying in store. Maintains warehouse area in a neat and orderly manner; cleans floors, tables and work areas.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists in maintaining the neatness and cleanliness of the sorting room and loading dock area. Performs other related work as required.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: No formal education required, and six months experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Valid State Driver's License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to sort items in accordance with established categories. Ability to determine the condition of items in accordance with established standards. Ability to follow instructions and work independently. Knowledge of the assigned geographic area. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions. Ability to frequently perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects not to exceed 50 lbs. Moderate mobility: duties are usually performed by combinations of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis. Distance of travel is usually within the same building.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Sorting Room Worker’s work is performed in a warehouse environment where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. Truck Helper’s work requires riding in a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
