About this opportunity:

Provides assistance in all areas of horse care and barn maintenance; assists with the cleaning of the barn and equipment. Provides assistance in preparing the horses to be ridden and provides assistance with riding lessons. Ensures the safety of horses and camp visitors at all times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assists with overall care of horses including but not limited to feeding, watering, bathing, grooming, and exercising of animals; provides animals vitamins and medications as requested by the supervisor.
  • Assists with barn and stall maintenance including
    • Cleaning stalls daily ensuring to scoop out all debris, horse droppings, and left over hay
    • assisting with emptying out stalls and putting in new mulch occasionally
    • sweeping out alleyway, tack room, and feed room
    • keeping water trough clean
    • assisting with thorough cleaning of water trough as needed especially after de-worming of horses
    • ensuring the barn area is left neat and clean at the end of duty;
  • Assists with cleaning and upkeep of riding equipment; ensures that all equipment is put away, clean and in the proper place; reports any broken or unsafe equipment to the Camp Wrangler Specialist.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines as well as American Camp Association accreditation standards.
  • Assists with riding sessions, saddling and preparing horses to be ridden; assists in the mounting and dismounting of riders; rides the lead horse as needed; assists in removing saddles and taking care of horses after riding session; assists in cleaning riding helmets with bleach after each use.
  • Ensures safety and a positive experience for campers.
  • Assists in the implementation of staff training for horseback riding; including rules of the trail, barn, and arena and safety equipment.
  • Trains other staff in their responsibilities when horseback riding.
  • Assists the Wrangler Specialist with any other duties as needed.
  • Participates enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Sits with camper tables during meals and serve as a table monitor when needed.
  • Keeps personal living quarters neat, clean and ready for inspection.
  • Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities in the absence of the Camp Wrangler Specialist.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What we are looking for in you:

  • Two years’ experience in riding and care of horses preferred, or
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications

  • CPR and First Aid Certification

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Some physical requirements of the Camp Wrangler Assistant position could be endurance including climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate activities are required. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available.  Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.

Additional Information:

Camp Staff Orientation will be held 06/5/2024 – 06/9/2024 and participation is required. The 2024 Summer Camp Program will be held 06/10/2024 – 07/20/2024. If you are unable to work the entire program session, please let us know on your application.
