School Counselor (Upper Division, Grades 9-12)

Stevenson School is seeking an experienced and effective clinician to fill an immediate full time opening. A vital member of the health and wellness team, the school counselor supports our students' well-being by identifying and responding to their psychological and emotional challenges through short- and long-term counseling, as well as crisis intervention. The school counselor reports to the upper division’s dean of students, and seeks to support and improve the overall social-emotional health of the students and community.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and qualities:

  • CA licensed marriage and family therapist, clinical psychologist or clinical social worker
  • Minimum of five years post-masters clinical work;
  • Experience with adolescent or young adult population;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships;
  • Excellent communication (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build trust;
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving the needs of a diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Meet one-on-one and in groups with students in need on a short-term basis to provide appropriate therapeutic support, helping students to develop coping strategies, resiliency, and communication skills.
  • Maintain meticulous related notes and records.
  • Consult with and advise family, Health Center staff, school administration, and faculty regarding students, as appropriate.
  • Make recommendations regarding care for students.
  • Serve as a competent resource to students and their families in need of community-based services, including psychiatric care, mental health evaluations, and specialized treatment.
  • Participate in evening and weekend on-call duties.
  • Facilitate Health & Wellness team with Dean of Students, Associate Head of the Upper Division, Health Center RN, and others as assigned. Develop a plan of action for any student in need of further support.
  • Meet regularly with the Community Wellness team to support community and health curricula development and delivery.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the Health Center staff to identify patterns of behavior for students that may suggest the need for counseling and/or support.
  • Actively participate in the life of the school.
  • Other duties as necessary.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is an independently licensed clinician, certified to practice in the state of California at the date of hire, with an advanced counseling degree (LMHC, MSW, PhD). A minimum of 5 years of relevant, post-graduate experience with adolescents and families is required, 5-10 years preferred; a demonstrated ability to work as a team and a commitment to inclusion and culturally competent practice are required.

The successful candidate will be positive, flexible, and helpful; understand organizational or independent school culture; be a skilled communicator with a demonstrated history of impeccable judgment, discipline, and collegiality in managing complicated situations with varied constituencies; work collaboratively and systemically with all constituencies of the school. Experience in working with students from historically under-represented populations and from other countries is especially welcome.

Given the unpredictable nature of the presenting concerns, and the fact that Stevenson includes a boarding program, a high degree of flexibility in regard to time commitment is crucial, and the position includes on-call evening and weekend hours.

Compensation

Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience and education level, including meals when school is in session. Stevenson provides an excellent, comprehensive benefit package, including tuition remission, retirement benefits, a variety of health insurance offerings, dental, vision, life, short- and long-term disability offerings, and HSA/FSA options. Resources to support advanced degree work, as well as participation in professional conferences, workshops, summer study, and travel, are also available. A stipend to support off-campus housing will be considered.

Stevenson is an equal opportunity employer. Unlawful discrimination based on sex, race, color, gender, gender identity, gender expression, religion, citizenship, military or veteran status, marital status, age, national origin or ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition, sexual orientation, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, genetic characteristics, and any other characteristic protected by Federal, State, or local laws is prohibited.
