Job Summary

Systems Engineer II is responsible for performing the deployment, configuration, support, maintenance, and retirement of infrastructure systems throughout the lifecycle. Responsible for advanced aspects of infrastructure troubleshooting and support, system maintenance, vulnerability management tasks, monitoring systems, reviewing logs, and maintaining system diagrams and documentation.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Provides “tier two” infrastructure support by managing the incident queue and performing initial troubleshooting; assist less experienced staff with troubleshooting complex issues to help them develop more effective troubleshooting techniques.
  • Collaborates with the service desk to ensure systems are properly configured in the monitoring system; proactively monitors the environment; responds to alerts and detects/diagnoses issues.
  • Collaborates with the security team to ensure system logs are being recorded in the security information and event management system and that proper alerting is configured.
  • Performs the maintenance and patching process by researching, documenting, and communicating the change impacts; managing change tickets; and implementing patches and fixes.
  • Collaborates with the asset management team to ensure infrastructure asset information is captured and maintained in the configuration management database from deployment through disposal.
  • Strictly adheres to and provides input to the change management processes and procedures.
  • Maintains system diagrams and documentation.
  • Continually develops new skill sets through formal and informal training and working with other experienced systems engineers.
  • Demonstrates safe work practices and complies with established safety procedures.

Server systems engineering and management assignment

  • Performs the installation and configuration of hardware in the data center and other locations across the organization following established processes and procedures.
  • Creates server images and configuration standards, using them to deploy and configure Windows and Red Hat Linux servers and perform on-going management of those servers.
  • Performs Active Directory services administration tasks for user and group accounts; endpoint and network services; group policy object management; DNS and DHCP administration.
  • Performs Active Directory services tasks including topology distribution and replication; configuration, schema management; security administration, maintenance, and reporting.
  • Assists with deployment and management of the storage area network (SAN) and perform on-going management of the system including configuration of storage and networking components, managing LUNs, monitoring, interpreting logs and troubleshooting issues.
  • Assists with deployment of the enterprise backup system and perform on-going management of the system including backup client software installation, performing server recoveries, configuration and troubleshooting of client and server backup issues.

Microsoft 365 and Office 365 management assignment

  • Performs Exchange administration including managing mailboxes, and licensing users.
  • Collaborates with other IT staff members to identify, configure, and assign Azure Active Directory roles, role template permissions, Office 365 groups and security settings.
  • Manages Azure Active Directory identity management, single sign-on, multi-factor authentication and application integration.
  • Manages Microsoft 365 tenant services and the entire suite of M365/O365 applications as required to meet business objectives.
  • Works with the enterprise applications group on the management of SharePoint online and integration of required Microsoft 365 applications.


Virtualization systems management assignment

  • Creates configuration of resource pools in VMware and resource groups in Azure.
  • Deploys new physical hosts, install, and configure hypervisors, implement virtual networking, and configure data stores. Manages virtual machines, templates, clones, and snapshots.
  • Manages Azure infrastructure resources including deploying, managing, and updating virtual servers in the cloud. Ensures monitoring of the virtual infrastructure is properly configured in the enterprise monitoring system.
  • Implements and manages high availability, replication, recovery, and failover features. Implements and manages resource scheduling features.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and remediates problems in the environment.
  • Performs vulnerability remediation and upgrades on the management systems.

Network engineering and administration assignment

  • nstalls, configures, tests, and manages switches, routers, wireless access points and other network equipment throughout the organization following established processes and procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring configurations are being backed up on a regular basis and that restore procedures are current and functional.
  • Manages routers and firewalls.
  • Assists with the definition and implementation of complex firewall rules and ACLs.
  • Deploys and configures wireless networking management and monitoring technologies.
  • Implements and configures device hardening technologies and techniques.
  • Assists the more experienced system engineers with the network architecture, design, and implementation planning.

  • Considered a subject matter expert in at least one of the assignment areas.
  • Experience using Visio or similar tools for creating diagrams and documentation.
  • Able to remain insurable under Platte River’s vehicle liability policy.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required when work assignments are made in specific functional areas:

Server systems engineering and management assignment

  • Intermediate understanding of OSI or TCP/IP networking models.
  • Comprehensive understanding of IP address management, DHCP and DNS.
  • Intermediate understanding of Active Directory and Azure Active Directory.
  • Intermediate understanding of servers, storage systems, network equipment and other datacenter hardware.
  • Intermediate understanding of monitoring and logging tools.

Microsoft 365 and Office 365 management assignment

  • Intermediate understanding of Active Directory and Azure Active Directory.
  • Intermediate understanding of Microsoft 365 and Office 365 applications and features.

Virtualization systems management assignment

  • Intermediate understanding of server virtualization concepts.
  • Intermediate understanding of virtual environment networking concepts.

Network engineering and administration assignment

  • Intermediate understanding of layer 2/3 networking concepts.
  • Intermediate understanding of wireless networking and management technologies.
  • Intermediate understanding of firewalls, ACLs, and VPNs.
  • Intermediate understanding of WAN and routing technologies.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer information systems, Computer Science, Engineering or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Required work experience

Work experience

  • Minimum of three years of experience as a systems engineer or equivalent in an enterprise computing environment.

Licenses/certifications

  • Current valid driver’s license and ability to remain insurable under Platte River’s vehicle liability policy.
  • IT Service Management training certification or ability to complete certification within the first year.
  • Completion of two entry-level related technical certifications is required.

Physical requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to frequently sit, stand, and walk. The employee must frequently lift up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phone, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and other office machines and equipment.

Bi-weekly salary range for this position: $3,730 - $5,129 (placement DOQ)
(range if annualized: $96,996 - $133,368)
