Senior Wellness Experience Director

General Function:

Under the supervision of the designated supervisor, and coordination with the Association Wellness Executive, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsula, the Wellness Experience Director is responsible for the overall daily operation of the wellness department to include financial growth, membership engagement, retention and growth, and supervision of all wellness programs. With an emphasis on ensuring the highest quality service to members and guests, the Wellness Experience Director will work closely with other center leaders in efforts to welcome, connect, support, and engage all members and staff.

 

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a wellness related field or equivalent experience preferred.
  2. Must have a minimum of three (3) years’ experience working in the Health & Wellness field, with certifications in the following:  ACE, AFAA, ACSM, or YMCA preferred in wellness and group exercise, preferred.
  3. Minimum two (2) years’ supervisory experience.
  4. Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 required within 60 days of hire.
  5. Must have ability to interact with people from all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles.
  6. Must have experience in the development of programs.
  7. Must possess skills and knowledge in the development and implementation of a wide range of wellness classes and activities, budgeting, hiring, training and supervision of staff and volunteers, and member recruitment and retention.
  8. Knowledge of a wide variety of wellness equipment and experience in the maintenance and repair of wellness cardio and strength equipment preferred.
  9. Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
  10. Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
  • Promote character development and the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in all program areas.
  • Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  • Participate in the Annual Giving Campaign as assigned by the Center Executive Director.
  • Participate in promoting YMCA membership through assisting in the recruiting and retaining of members utilizing retention tools available.

Program Development

    • Review and evaluate all programs to determine member satisfaction and to ensure all programs meet quality standards.
    • Organize, plan, promote, and schedule monthly programs to include small community groups and annual events for the wellness department to include group exercise.
    • Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of wellness and adult programming, and group exercise.
    • Direct and perform wellness orientations and evaluations to ensure quality and safe programming for members and program participants.

Program Administration

    • Maintain accurate staff records and ensure certifications are current for self and staff in order to meet/exceed association guidelines.
    • Prepare annual budget for program areas and responsibilities and take appropriate action to correct variances.
    • Responsible for the care, maintenance and storage of program supplies and equipment in accordance with the operating budget to include the wellness center, group exercise studios.
    • Produce monthly department schedules for staff and programs. Coordinate group exercise classes with instructors. 
    • Be proficient with Y-branding and creation of correctly Y-branded materials.
    • Input staff schedules into payroll system.  Verify staff timesheets and approve payroll each cycle.
    • Follow all association standard guidelines. 

Team Leadership

  • Hires, develops motivates and retains a committed staff/volunteer team passionate about the YMCA’s mission and service to members for adult programing in wellness department.
  • Holds regular one-on-one meetings with all staff members to learn about, gauge satisfaction, and provide career development coaching/training.
  • Holds regular department staff meetings to train, coach, role-play, and provide updates on center and association-initiatives.
  • Provides leadership to the branch by participating in branch meetings and events, association leadership teams and task forces as assigned to increase communication, awareness and quality in the organization.
  • Completes all job-related, supervisory, and other trainings as required.
  • Ensures all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow branch Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
  • Actively participates in center leadership activities (to include Supervisor on Duty and occasional special events).
  • Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the wellness department.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  1. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. 
  2. Assisting in the planning, design, and implementation and budgeting for all programs within the wellness department.
  3. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employee addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  4. Interview, hires, and train all wellness personnel.
  5. Appraise and evaluate all employee performance.
  6. Reward and discipline department employees.
  7. Address member and staff concerns and on-going communication with Center Executive Director to ensure smooth operation of the facility.

 

Skills and Abilities:

  1. Ability to communicate well with both members and staff.
  2. Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents. 
  3. Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints.
  4. Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.  Must be able to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as budget preparation and program planning.
  5. Ability to reason and define difficult problems with limited direction as to means and results. 
  6. Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include mobility for touring facilities, travel to conferences, and participating in promotional and special events sponsored by the Association.
  7. Ability to meet the physical demands of this position which include:
    1. Ability to conduct classes and activities relating to fitness. 
    2. Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and occasionally lifting up to 75 pounds.
    3. Ability to respond to emergency situations.
