The Philadelphia Inquirer is a public benefit corporation owned by the nonprofit Lenfest Institute for Journalism. Together, we’re at the center of a critical mission to create a lasting future for ambitious, engaging, and useful local journalism. We’re doing this, in part, by deepening our connection with the communities we serve. Our integrated digital and print platforms are the Philadelphia region’s largest media network. We’re passionate about building a sustainable model for indispensable local journalism, and we take pride in finding diverse, dynamic, and talented individuals to help push our team forward.

Job Summary: The Philadelphia Inquirer’s front-end engineering team is looking for an intern to help assist with the development and maintenance of the React JS codebase that runs the newspaper’s flagship website and associated properties. You’ll join a product-focused group of product managers, UI/UX designers, front- and back-end engineers, and our QA team to improve the digital experience of staying up to date with the latest news in the region and beyond.

What You’ll Do

  • Contribute to the React JS codebases of our component library, content management system (CMS), and internal tools to better serve our amazing Inquirer editors and journalists
  • Participate in the agile rituals that make up a week in the life of an Inquirer engineer such as our daily standup, task refinement, and work prioritization meetings
  • Collaborate with other product group team members to find the best solutions to meet our readership goals

Who We’re Looking For

A successful candidate will be someone who:

  • Is interested in a career in the field of web software engineering
  • Has a strong curiosity to dive into complex systems, troubleshoot problem areas, and apply innovation solutions
  • Experience with relevant technologies is a plus, including but not limited to modern JavaScript and frameworks such as React JS, and back-end frameworks like Node.js, CSS and SASS, and back-end REST architecture. Specific knowledge of these technologies is not required, however, as long as you have some basic coding experience.

Other Things To Know:

  • To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume that includes relevant experience

The Philadelphia Inquirer is committed to attracting a diverse group of interested people to join our team, so please err on the side of applying even if you’re unsure if you meet all the qualifications. We encourage anyone to apply who shares our passion for indispensable journalism and our drive to create a sustainable business model to support it.

As an equal opportunity employer, The Inquirer is building an inclusive and equitable workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. We especially encourage people from marginalized and underrepresented backgrounds to apply, including people of color, women, people from the LGBTQIA+ community, and people with disabilities.
