The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) is an authority of the City of Pittsburgh responsible for operating and managing a water treatment plant, water distribution system, sewer collection system and associated appurtenances. The Cooperative Education Intern will be under the general supervision of the Senior Project Manager, Sewer Group.  Primary responsibilities will consist of contributing to development services, including but not limited to, reviewing development permit applications, performing technical plan reviews, maintaining GIS databases and assisting with private developer projects.  The Cooperative Education intern will also provide technical support to various efforts within the Department of Engineering and Construction.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
● Manage and act on assigned Development Permit applications within the ClearForms portal
● Attend and contribute at up to four (4) pre-development meetings each week
● Perform technical review of Tap-in Plans to ensure compliance with PWSA standards
● Communication of technical matters via written and oral mediums
● Ability to perform work duties in a hybrid work environment
● Additional duties will be added to support organizational and departmental needs
● Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on the Development Projects database which will include record information research, field investigations, etc.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
● Knowledge of Windows Office products is required for this position.  
● Proficient in the use of technical related software (e.g. GIS, CAD, etc.) is desired. 
● Strong ability to communicate (written and oral) effectively with technical and non-technical personnel.
 
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements list the minimum education/training/experience required to qualify for this job. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be accepted.
● Current or recent enrollment in a bachelor‘s degree, or master degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in Engineering or an acceptable related field.
 
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicant must present a current, valid Class C (Class 1) Motor Vehicle Operator’s License at the time of application or prior to appointment.  A valid driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment.
 
Applicant must have permanent residency in Allegheny County at time of appointment and remain a permanent resident throughout employment with the PWSA. 
 
Applicant must be able to complete a minimum of two (2) rotations, but preferably three (3) rotations.
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED / RECEIVED
No direct reports / Will receive supervision directly from the Senior Project Manager, Sewer Group.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands consist of walking, climbing stairs, finger movements including fine dexterity and coordination, hearing conversation, seeing near and far, and speaking clearly. Frequently bending, stooping, repetitive leg and arm movements, lifting up to 25 lbs. 
 
CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to a moderate or quiet noise level in the office work environment. Subject to remain on duty beyond normal hours or during emergency situations or other extensive periods.
  
MEDICAL EXAMINATION
Employment may be contingent upon the results of a post-offer (initial employment or promotion) physical examination performed by the Authority's examining physician.

DRUG TESTING
Employment may be contingent upon the results of a post-offer (initial employment or promotion) drug screening. Continued employment may be subject to drug, and alcohol testing conducted without advance notice and without individualized suspicion.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
Ability to successfully pass a thorough investigation consisting of a criminal history check, verification of prior employment and performance, reference, and credentials checks, and in some cases credit history.
