Summary

To ensure an exciting and diverse aquarium of exhibits that entertain, excite and educate the guests. To serve as the subject matter expert in all things Animal Care related; leading the Animal Care Professionals to develop and maintain a safe, healthy, and enrichment filled environment for the animals.  Maintain Aquarium and animal facilities in compliance with government and industry standards.

 

 

Roles & Responsibilities

The roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

·         Lead the Animal Care Professionals through training, scheduling, maintaining high team member moral and motivation throughout the aquarium floor.

·         Ensure all exhibits are set-up, clean and lit in the best possible way to display the creatures in an engaging, educational and fun way that is conducive to the animal’s welfare.

·         Continuing to expand their knowledge and abilities in all aspects of behavioral theory, husbandry procedures including food preparation, disinfection procedures, vitamin administration, record keeping, along with animal observation, conditioning techniques and showmanship skills through active participation.

·         Continuously update Standard Operating Procedures as tanks, and animals change within the facility.

·         Ensure meticulous record keeping for water and creature parameters, responding to any trends or changes are appropriate to the creatures in those systems.  

·         Look for opportunities for implementing a breeding program for suitable species, working with other marine organizations for best practice and learnings. 

·         Compile and update an acquisition plan for the exhibits in conjunction with the Operations Director, including successfully acclimatizing and training native animals.

·         Possesses an excellent understanding of proper water desalination, gating and separation techniques.

·         Understanding of fish and invertebrate health, disease ID, mortality logs and trends, treatment, and related quarantine protocols as well as the ability to determine and act on the best course of treatment or remediation.

·         Assist in weekly Manager on Duty program, along with interviewing and acquiring new team members for the aquarium floor.

·         Manage all aspects of the exhibit floor including the coordination and preparation of reviews while clearly communicating amongst the ACP and EA teams to educate the staff on daily priorities and changes.

·         Ensure educational signage and talks are continually reviewed, improved upon and relevant to the exhibits and environment.

·         Manage and control expenses, labor usage, while evaluating, and leveraging opportunities to drive revenue, reduce costs and increase efficiency.

·         Understanding and recording of water quality, maintenance and filtration, including familiarity with a variety of life support systems and water testing procedures/equipment and ability to define problems and perform necessary adjustments and repairs as needed.

·         Assist Operations Director with care and welfare of livestock animals at Story Land during peak season. 

·         Act as Dive Safety Officer for the aquarium, including safety drills, competence sign offs and adherence with regulations.

·         Work towards taking the attraction to becoming AZA accredited.

 

Requirements

 

·         Education, previous experience or internship with Marine Biology, Zoology or related field preferred or equivalent specialized training.  Depth and breadth of applicable experience is critical including extensive knowledge of Life Support Systems.

·         At least 5 years of experience in a leadership/management role.

·         The ability to communicate clearly, concisely and persuasively with a wide range of diverse personnel and guests. 

·         Physical demands include ability to walk and stand for long periods of time, and ability to perform physical inspections of the facility and all exhibits.  This may include frequent bending, stooping, and lifting up to 50 pounds. 

·         Age 18 or older.

·         Open water scuba certification preferred.

·         Rescue trained.

·         First Aid, AED, and Oxygen certification preferred.
