Zoo Locomotive Engine Driver (Full Time)

Department – Trust Fund Rides

Full-time, Hourly

Hourly Pay Range: $22.03 - $23.34 ($45,822.4 - $48,547.2)

Job Summary

To operate miniature diesel locomotives; to perform necessary repairs and adjustments to the engine, passenger coaches and tracks; to document pertinent information for train operation and provide customer service to zoo patrons.

 

** The North Shore Bank Safari Train is a favorite experience of zoo guests. Excellent customer service and the ability to work weekends, holidays and evenings as required to meet our passengers’ needs. **

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Daily Operation of Locomotives - Operate miniature diesel locomotives and work with seasonal employees.
  • Repairs and Upkeep - Perform necessary major/minor repairs and adjustments to engines, coaches, tracks, paint coaches, and trucks. Wash and clean locomotives and trucks as needed.
  • Customer Service - Interact with customers between train rides and provide information about our miniature railroad. Respond to questions, inquiries about service and handle complaint requests.
  • Documentation - Document preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs and adjustments for engines and coaches on a daily basis.
  • Maintain parts inventory and complete shop cleanliness.
  • Collaborate with Locomotive engineer team to diagnose problems and plan repair.
  • Participate in train track inspections and repair planning.
  • Operation of Equipment, Tools and Machinery – Ability to safely and properly operate train locomotives, pressure washers, blow torches, grinders, hand tools and various other equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current resident of WI
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid State of Wisconsin Driver’s License required.
  • Commercial Driver’s License preferred.
  • One (1) year or more work experience in Ride Operation, Train Operations, Train Mechanical Services, Fleet maintenance preferred.
  • Working mechanical knowledge of diesel engines preferred
  • Basic knowledge of use of hydraulics preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of use of air compressors preferred.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50+ lbs.
  • Ability to push and pull 100+ lbs.
