Research Tech II (Ollmann-Saphire Lab)
Job Summary
We are looking for two highly motivated Research Technicians with a protein chemistry and characterization background to join the Ollmann-Saphire lab. The successful candidates will support protein cloning, expression, purification, and analytical characterization for vaccine and antibody discovery. These Research Technician positions are a great opportunity for experienced technicians as well as recent graduates to expand their skills in state-of-the-art protein chemistry techniques, vaccinology, and cryo-EM, while accelerating therapeutic discovery and development in translational medicine and structural biology for several viral diseases.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
● Express and purify recombinant proteins from mammalian cell culture and bacteria
● Characterize purified protein samples using SDS-PAGE, HPLC and other analytical assays
● Isolate RNA from single cells and perform downstream processing (reverse transcription and PCR) to obtain paired antibody sequences
● Maintain a detailed and well-organized record of experiments in a notebook
● Work independently while adhering to established protocols
● Organize time and plan specifics of project related work with oversight from manager
● Troubleshoot technical and instrumentation issues and recommend solutions
Key skills preferred:
● Experience with mammalian cell culture
● Hands-on experience with recombinant protein purification utilizing AKTA system
● Expertise in analytical characterization methods such as SDS-PAGE, HPLC and SEC-MALS
● Experience performing cell-based assays to identify functional antibody candidates and/or biochemical characterization (ELISA, BLI, SPR) to determine binding specificities and binding kinetics
● Experience with multi-color flow cytometry
● Experience with NGS and/or bioinformatics
● Ability to work in fast paced environments and make contributions to multiple projects
● Attention to detail, self-motivation, and creative thinking will be essential
Leveling Requirements
● Requires a BA/BS Degree with two years prior laboratory experience, or an MS Degree with demonstrated working knowledge of scientific principles.
● Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
● Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task
● Familiarity with and enthusiasm for basic biological research
● Pertinent laboratory experience will be favorably considered
