Travel Plaza Transportation, LLC (TPT) has evolved into one of Hawaii's largest bus operators, with an extensive fleet of commercial vehicles, and a broad suite of transportation service offerings on Oahu.  In 2019, we introduced a new fleet of vehicles, including electric buses.  TPT is the first private  transportation company to acquire electric buses in support of our island community and the rest of the global community to achieve environmental sustainability.

Primary Responsibilities:  Under general supervision, independently perform inspections, diagnostics and repair of motorcoach vehicles, diesel and gasoline engines, and servicing of vehicles and equipment in a diversified fleet.

General Service and Repair

  1. Perform routine preventative maintenance and inspections on vehicles/equipment, according to the maintenance schedule timeframe for all vehicles and equipment.
  2.  Evaluate, analyze and test automotive systems to determine nature and extent of defect. 
  3. Estimate and/or document time and labor hours necessary to complete repair or replacement of defective parts.
  4. Replace, repair, and overhaul electrical equipment, compressed air equipment, cooling equipment, hydraulic equipment, heavy-duty transmissions, gas and diesel engines, drive and steering axles, suspension systems.

Diagnostics and Road Repair 

  1. Inspect and identify problems, and repair malfunctioning vehicles/equipment.
  2. Identify needed repair parts, and fabricate parts as necessary.
  3. Perform emergency field repair, in all types of weather, including pickup and delivery to the job site.
  4. Perform general maintenance on equipment/vehicles, as well as the garage building, bus wash, gas tanks, equipment, and grounds when necessary.

Work Records and Shop Maintenance

  1. Maintain accurate records of time and materials along with the amount of service provided on each job.
  2. Maintain work area; maintain tools and equipment in safe, clean, and usable condition.

 Secondary Functions:

  1. May perform more difficult repairs when assisting staff in performing duties or when on emergency road calls.
  2. In absence of the Manager or Supervisor, will work with other employees and ensure that the work is proceeding on schedule and deadlines are met.
  3. Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. High school, and three (3) years mechanical experience/training in electronic, diesel, air brakes, and cooling systems.  Graduate from an accredited college or trade school.
  2. Within the last ten (10) years, possess at least two (2) years’ work experience as a Fleet Mechanic – 3rd Class, and/or a two (2) year degree from an accredited college or trade school.
  3.  Possess a valid Hawaii State Driver's License, with clear drivers abstract
  4. Possess an active CDL B license, plus passenger endorsement.  Or, obtain within one (1) year of employment from date of hire.
  5. Possess ASE certifications H4 and H8 or equivalent MCI Training program, preferred but not required.
  6. Possess working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance, including diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs using safety practices and procedures.
  7. Possess knowledge of mechanical design and fabrication, and electrical systems, including computerized induction/ignition systems.
  8. Able to follow manufacturer’s service specifications and operate vehicles and equipment for diagnostic purpose.  
  9. Able to use power and hand tools, diagnostic equipment, Acetylene and electric arc welding skills.
  10. Able to prepare and maintain detailed records and reports.

Working Conditions:

Working Hours

  1. Up to 40 hours per week, Sunday - Saturday, or as needed.  Shift work and holidays as needed.
  2. Regular attendance at the workplace is required.

  Working Environment

  1. Mechanical repair work is performed both inside and outside.  Work extended hours outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  2. May have intermittent exposure to outside elements, noise, vibration and oils; mechanical, electrical hazards; atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin; may be required to wear respirator for some duties.
  3. May occasionally need to perform work in confined spaces or under limited lighting conditions.
  4. May be exposed to solvents, cleaners, fumes, dust, dirt, grease, oils, fuel, and other chemicals used in an automotive/heavy equipment maintenance facility.

Equipment Used

  • Must be able to operate and use a variety of general and special purpose hand tools, power tools, hydraulic tools, air tools, measurement devices, electrical, and other testing equipment; hoist and lift equipment; welding equipment; chemicals; safety equipment and clothing; telephone, cellular phone, two-way radio, or a combination of both cellular phone and two-way radio; written manuals; maps and schematics; computer and laptop computer; and digital camera.

Physical and Mental DemandsMust meet standard physical requirements and pass company sponsored medical examination, CDL, and drug/alcohol tests. 

  1. Demonstrated competency and proficiency in the diagnostics pertaining to repair/replacement on power trains and accessories, suspension systems, and electrical/electronic systems.
  2. Able to use information and subject matter knowledge related to data and information obtained through observation, interpretation, visualization, and practical experience.
  3. Able to acquire technical information concerning failure/symptom and repair procedure outlined in the computer software, manuals, schematics, and general experience.
  4. Alertness, attention to detail, concentration, and able to analyze situations.
  5. Able to interpret, and follow a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; comprehend service manuals and keep abreast of technical changes.
  6. Must diagnose problems and make decisions on the best method to conduct repairs. 
  7. Constant – requires pushing, pulling/lifting/carrying less than 25 pounds to more than 50 pounds;
  8. Constant – requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, climbing, forward reaching, twisting, side bending, overhead reach, grasping, handling, finger dexterity, vision, hearing, eye-hand-foot coordination;
  9. Occasional – requires running.

  1. Able to explain equipment repair techniques by explanation, demonstration, and supervised practice.
  2. Constant – requires talking and written communication to co-workers, talking on the telephone, responding to written or verbal requests of co-workers and vendors, receiving written and verbal instructions, reading, visiting/working at different worksites;
