We currently have multiple openings for Traffic Management Center – Operators for our Staunton Virginia Department of Transportation location. Traffic Management Center (TMC) Operators monitor assigned roadways to detect, verify, and manage travel-impacting events (e.g., congestion, crashes, roadwork).    

 

What you will be doing: 

  • Operators respond to and manage traffic incidents by providing traveler information to the public, dispatching field responders, and communicating/coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Operators work in a control room and use computer systems for incident reporting and to control field technology (e.g., traffic cameras, electronic message signs).
  • Operators use a telephone and two-way radios to dispatch resources and communicate with responders and agencies for coordinated traffic incident management.
  • Operations employees (operators, supervisors, etc.) are designated as essential personnel, and must be able to work in all conditions (e.g., severe weather, pandemic).
  • Further, the role may require additional hours and flexibility of scheduling in response to increased demands of significant events as this is a 24 hour/7 days per week operation.
  • The position requires a full commitment to the team and to the important mission of providing a safe, efficient, and reliable transportation system.

  • High School Diploma/Equivalent
  • Excellent verbal communication skills over phone and in person   
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment   
  • Ability to take direction and follow detailed procedures   
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Punctual and reliable schedule adherence
