This position is similar to an Employment Specialist position. It is ideal for someone who wants to help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) achieve their vocational goals and work toward a more independent lifestyle. Job Development Specialists support a caseload of individuals in obtaining competitive, community based employment.
The Job Development Specialists work directly with our participants to fully understand their interests and goals and offer continued support in the development of their job seeking skills, communication skills, social skills, and self-advocacy skills. This includes developing strong relationships with participants, their families, funders, and potential employers. There are ongoing needs to work closely with our business partners and potential employers when creating new positions for our participants and in matching participants with positions that are a good fit. Therefore ideal candidates are patient, kind, have clear and timely communication, and consider themselves advocates for the IDD community.

This position is qualified to receive continuous bonus incentives as the Job Development Specialist help find employment for people on their caseload. 

Continuing Education and Professional Development opportunities are available and paid for by Imagine!. As an employee gains extra certifications and credentials they are eligible to apply to higher positions within our Employment Services career ladder. 

Key aspects of this position include:

  • Conduct assessment, job readiness process and job development for participants.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with individuals with IDD, families, advocates, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) counselors and employers.
  • Provides participants with travel training and/or assistance with public transportation.
  • Conducts outreach to employers in the community through a variety of methods including: cold calling, arranging meetings, and attending networking events.
  • Works collaboratively with team to identify opportunities for additional positions with current Imagine! business partners. Follows through on established leads.
  • Assumes full responsibility for a caseload of participants, including documenting all services as required and completing reports required by DVR. Completes required paperwork in a timely and organized manner.
  • Supports with creating job descriptions
  • Promotes team morale by being positive and professional.

Training and Supports:

Imagine provides paid training for all of our Job Development Specialists. A list of trainings provided includes, but is not limited to:

  • Association of Community Rehabilitation Educators (ACRE) Certificate
  • Building Cooperative Behaviors
  • CPR and First Aid
  • Safety Care certification by Quality Behavioral Solutions
  • Driving and vehicle safety
  • Shadowing shifts with veteran staff and supervisors
  • More advanced trainings available for those seeking employment growth


Job Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

  • General knowledge of the developmental disabilities system in Colorado.
  • Basic knowledge of standards and regulations regarding Supported Employment.
  • Demonstrated skill in working with adults with developmental disabilities in a community setting.
  • General knowledge of the developmental disabilities system in Colorado.

  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks/goals for self and others.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with individuals and groups at all professional levels.
  • Ability to provide effective training to individuals and groups.
  • Ability to have difficult and/or sensitive conversations with others in a confidential and respectful manner.
  • Ability to work effectively with various technology including word processing software, internet based databases, assistive technology, etc.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to meet Imagine! driving requirements.
  • This position requires regular use of a personal mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet.
  • This position requires regular use of a personal vehicle with liability insurance that meets Imagine! standards.

Training and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services field or closely related field preferred. Students or graduates pursing their MSW may also be interested, but that is not a requirement of the position.
  • One year or more of full-time work experience providing satisfactory job coaching services preferred


  • One year experience working with people with developmental disabilities (or comparable work) preferred but not required.
    • Comparable work experience includes Job Coach, Employment Specialist, Case Manager, Advocate, experience in education (such as Teacher, Paraprofessional or SPED Certified Professional, and marketing or sales positions

Working Environment/Physical Activities:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (lifting occurs rarely).
  • This job requires standing and walking for up to 6 hours per day.
  • Activities take place within community settings.
  • Effective with shifting roles, responsibilities, and expectations in a changing environment.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations as-needed.
