Public Relations Manager

 

Job Summary:

IHS is seeking a Public Relations Manager to join the Communications and Marketing team. Reporting to the Director of Marketing, the Public Relations Manager will be a key player in managing media relationships, shaping the organization's public image, and ensuring effective communication strategies.

 

The Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) supports and partners with university professors within the classical liberal intellectual tradition, aiming to foster an open exchange of ideas in higher education. IHS provides support for aspiring and established professors, offering graduate student fellowships, career development support, research funding, and facilitating scholarly convenings to advance ideas essential to a free and pluralistic society.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Handle media placement and scheduling for organization’s CEO and President, Emily Chamlee-Wright, as well as the organization’s media surrogate(s).
    • Work closely with the President’s executive assistant to coordinate efforts.
  • Conduct daily monitoring of media mentions, social media chatter, and other relevant channels for the organization, staff with a public presence, and organization partners and competitors.
  • Flag issues and recommend appropriate courses of action, including the creation of talking points and real-time responses to live situations.
  • Assess risks associated with the public writing and appearances of Emily Chamlee-Wright and the organization's media surrogate(s).
  • Develop and implement plans to mitigate identified risks, ensuring a positive public perception.
  • Stay up to date with partner priorities, media strategies, and scholar impact.
  • Identify and flag opportunities to create content or collaborate on content with partners and scholars.
  • Collaborate with the Communications & Marketing Team to align messaging with broader organizational goals.

 

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in a PR role.
  • Proven track record in media placement, crisis management, and strategic communication.
  • Experience with social and media listening tools, such as Sprout Social, Meltwater, etc.
  • Strong understanding of classical liberal thought and commitment to the mission of IHS.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience communicating and collaborating with senior leadership.

Salary: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 annually, commensurate with experience.
