The general salary range for this position is  $77,000-$92,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Senior Accountant, Investment for the Accounting Department.  In this position you will assist in managing, monitoring, and reporting on the organization’s investment portfolio as part of the Accounting department. Analyzes and reconciles investments and activities and prepares related schedules and documentation as needed.  

You will be responsible for:
• Assisting in managing the organization’s investment portfolio and recording all activity in the general ledger as part of the Accounting department. Reviewing mission-related securities and stock purchased and sold;
• Analyzing the monthly investment portfolio spreadsheets for accuracy, reconciling investments between the general ledger and broker statements, and preparing journal entries. Preparing roll forward for cash flow and for the financial statement audit;
• Compiling and analyzing schedules for organization and affiliate investments in support of the annual financial statement audit;
•  Recording and reporting on annuity transactions. Reviewing or preparing reports on annual annuity activity for compliance with appropriate states;
•  Preparing subcontract documentation for unique and alternate investments;
•  Preparing quarterly reports on the investment portfolio for management;
•  Preparing cash flow reporting for the investment portfolio. Preparing monthly investment reports as needed for the Finance team to enable overall organization cash flow reporting;
•  Preparing and maintaining other documentation and activity as needed, including gift stock reconciliation, miscellaneous stock redemption, fee payments, and backup tax information;
•  Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:
•  Bachelor's degree in Accounting or another related field, or equivalent work experience, required;
•  A minimum of four (4) years of experience in investment/finance accounting, preferably in non-profits, or another related field required;
•  Excellent math skills;
•  Advanced knowledge of accounting procedures, GAAP, and financial reporting;
•  Advanced knowledge of investments including stocks, bonds, offshore, oil and gas, derivatives, and private equity;
•  Proficiency with modern accounting software preferred; 
•  Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);
•  Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
•  Ability to multitask and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments;
•  Ability to exercise judgment;
• Strong written and verbal communication skills;
•  Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
•  Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment;
•  Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
