Editor, Climate, Environment and Health Team
The Detroit Free Press/freep.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeking an experienced editor to work with a senior group of reporters and to maintain and develop our coverage in these areas.
This is a job for a senior journalist experienced in editing for digital and print and who will serve as a team leader but also as a senior manager in our newsroom.
Our expectation for this team is distinguished enterprise and investigative journalism focused on Michigan's long-standing environmental issues as well as the ongoing impact of climate change in the state.
In addition, this editor will lead our accomplished health reporters, continuing to help evolve our coverage of COVID and other health issues in Detroit and the state.
A new Report for America fellow covering children's health will report to this editor. Our focus at the Free Press remains on unique, revelatory reporting that is of impact.
This editor will be a key player in our ongoing efforts to drive digital subscriptions and in developing content uniquely suited for digital presentations as well as sustaining our print product.
Responsibilities:
- Act as a public ambassador through community outreach and connect with readers through social media.
- Lead thoughtful reporting on complex issues.
- Lead watchdog journalism that leads to change.
- Lead storytelling journalism that meets audience needs and interests on every platform, including written narratives, audio and video broadcasts.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least five years of experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
- Must have technical skills - understanding use of metrics, Microsoft Office Suite, videography, and photography.
- Must have required skills - social media, advanced storytelling, advanced analytical ability, interpersonal skills, time management and interpersonal skills.
- Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
- Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check.
