The Greenville News is seeking an energetic, thoughtful reporter to cover housing and gentrification.

Greenville is one of the fastest growing communities in South Carolina and is projected to add more than 200,000 new residents in the next 20 years. Already, the community’s rapid growth has had a major impact on housing opportunities, and it’s a story that we are aggressively chasing.

The rapid growth has had multiple impacts that include: Increasing housing prices, especially in and around downtown Greenville; gentrification that has displaced thousands of middle-income residents, many of them people of color; a rush to develop new areas in and around the city; and it’s leading to sprawl as people seek affordable housing further outside the city center.

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field
  • 2-3 years of experience working in a daily newsroom, preferably with some experience covering housing or development.
  • The ability to find and analyze complex data and use that analysis to find and write compelling stories that are personality driven, not numbers driven
  • Sound news judgment and a knowledge of AP style
  • The ability to work independently, when needed, and to work with a team when the story demands it

Greenville, South Carolina, is in the Upstate, near the Georgia and North Carolina state lines. It’s a fast-growing metropolitan area that’s also a short drive to the mountains or to the coast, and halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte. There’s a lot to do here, and even more to do within a 2-hour drive in nearly any direction.
