Engagement Editor


The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, are looking for an editor to lead and shape audience engagement and service journalism efforts for the largest news organization in Arizona.


Job details and who we are searching for:


The Republic seeks an editor who can lead a team tasked with understanding our audiences and how we can form better connections with them. While we are the largest newspaper in Arizona, we also maintain one of the largest digital presences in the state.


We want someone who can write and edit with a strong voice and is particularly interested trending topics of conversation within our community and how to create connections with new audiences through emerging social platforms (TikTok) and traditional ones (Facebook and Twitter).


We want to try new things and are looking for someone who puts our current and potential audiences first and wants to meet them on whatever platform they are on. The position demands initiative, accuracy, urgency and insight.


A great audience editor has an interest beyond distributing the driven, timely and investigative work produced by The Arizona Republic to existing and new audiences. We hope you are someone that likes to experiment, but also knows how to evaluate and iterate on ideas.


Our audience editor is a core part of leadership, pitching social and audience-focused angles to the broader newsroom and collaborating with reporters, editors and leaders to create and distribute stories and our best work. They also serve as the voice of the audience, ensuring that projects appeal to and resonate with audiences, particularly those of young and underheard communities.


Because of the broad breadth and depth of your arena, your toolkit will vary. You might work on a strategy to distribute an investigation, then pivot to brainstorming and approving social visuals, then edit a service story that helps answer a trending question, all in one day.


You will also attend and present at key editorial and story meetings, using audience feedback and metrics from platforms and analytics programs like Parse.ly.

This position means working with producers and reporters, coaching and mentoring interns and fellows, and working with other editors, reporters and producers to ensure that we have news available to our audiences as soon as they are looking for it.


The team:

Our 130-person newsroom is mission-driven and passionate about storytelling. The Republic is a multi-platform, digital-first newsroom and our editors work on print, online and other formats throughout their day.

Your team consists of social producers and one engagement reporter, as well as interns throughout the year. They manage and post to all our social platforms in addition to working with teams throughout the newsroom to discover and distribute stories of interest to our audience. You’d provide daily direction and leadership and be the guide for how we can reach new audiences and in what way on social platforms.




  • Manage a team of staff and interns to discover and distribute stories.
  • Collaborate with editors, reporters, visuals and producers to come up with unique ways to reach out audiences.
  • Identify and pitch stories that are trending and of interest to our audiences.
  • Identify and assign service journalism stories that answer questions and provide guidance so our audiences can live rich and informed lives.
  • Maintaining and updating analytics and metrics for our social channels.
  • Experiment with new ways of informing and engaging audiences on social platforms and alternate story forms.
  • Pitching and running creative relevant engagement projects.
  • Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.


Knowledge and skills:

  • Comfort with flexing different skillsets (and learning new ones.)
  • Comfort in context switching through a single day, as determined by news and other priorities.
  • A keen interest in what audiences care about and the tools used to discover such topics, like Google Trends, CrowdTangle and Dataminr.
  • An insatiable curiosity about the community around us and the desire to use your voice to speak up for them.
  • Passion for teaching and mentoring others, whether they are your direct reports or a colleague learning a new skillset.
  • A love of serving information needs with stories but also solutions and conversation through traditional journalism, but also social media, texting and other formats.
  • A mindset of growth and change, and a willingness to try, be wrong, and learn from failure.
  • Enthusiasm for a job that is centered around the audience's need.
  • A background in engagement reporting and/or story editing is strongly preferred. 



  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Is passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.
  • Is comfortable using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to enhance reporting and promote stories.
  • Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.
  • Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.
  • Strong news judgment and editing skills.
  • Comfortable in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Able to use analytics to help further coverage strategy.
  • Able to work occasional late nights as needed by the news cycle.
