JOB PURPOSEThe Pharmacist as part of an interdisciplinary health care team is responsible for providing high quality pharmaceutical patient care and services to El Rio Health patients at a clinic location assigned by management. In this role, the Pharmacist is responsible for disbursing medications and drugs prescribed by physicians and other health care practitioners, and for providing counseling and information to patients and staff about these medications and their use. The incumbent in this position works with administrative supervision and has discretion and independent judgment authority with respect to matters of significance in respect to pharmaceutical patient care, resolving any work problems involving departures from standard policies, interpretations, or procedures for which the Pharmacist is responsible for within the scope of authority as defined by the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy and the policies and procedures of El Rio Health.

The primary goal of the El Rio Health Pharmacist is to support El Rio’s Mission of providing comprehensive, quality health care that is affordable and accessible to all who may have healthcare needs, by successfully performing the primary essential functions.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Performs and/or completes all assigned pharmaceutical care and administrative duties or

responsibilities supporting pharmacy operations within established time frames, meeting established

rates of performance for the quality and quantity of work for the position; demonstrating a level of quality

efficiency, and accuracy in the employee’s job performance that ensures the highest standards of excellence.

  • Demonstrates at all times a professional attitude and acceptable job performance for all duties and responsibilities supporting the implementation of established strategic goals and objectives for the Pharmacy Department and El Rio Health.
  • Maintains at all times patient confidentiality by controlling the environment and information being disclosed to individuals ensuring compliance with all HIPAA and corporate compliance standards.
  • Provides high quality pharmaceutical care to patients in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Serves as a drug information resource to patients, providers and internal clients on medication related questions or matters.
  • Provides patient counseling, drug information, drug therapy consultation, health promotion and disease prevention related to medication use.
  • Counsels health care providers regarding drug interactions, indications, drug dosage and side effects.
  • Communicates with and verifies a patient’s understanding of medications and desired outcomes of the drug therapy.
  • Reviews and ensures the appropriateness of drug therapy, collaborating with the health care team members.
  • Responsible for performing final verification of prescriptions and medications being dispensed such as:
    • Evaluates appropriate drug dosing
    • Evaluates drug and food interactions
    • Evaluates appropriateness of drug therapy
    • Provides effective patient counseling
    • Clinical intervention.
    • Medication therapy management
    • Making decisions regarding generic and therapeutic substitutions
    • Evaluates therapeutic substitutions secondary to formulary requirements
  • Ensures that policies and procedures related to pharmacy operations are followed, such as
    • Compliance with receiving, filling, dispensing, logging, and loss prevention controls for medications within the pharmacy
    • Implementation and compliance with environmental, safety, and infection control standards by pharmacy staff
  • Gains and maintains a comprehensive understanding that ensures compliance with Federal, State, and 340B Drug Pricing Program regulations, standards, and laws; as well as any standards and requirements for third party funding sources.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and hygienic work environment in compliance with all Policies and Procedures including but not limited to work areas, workstations, examination rooms, hand washing, infection prevention and control etc. for this position
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and proficiency with the application of all Joint Commission Accreditation standards and reporting requirements applicable to pharmacy operations and a Pharmacist.
  •      Develops positive results-orientated relationships by communicating effectively using verbal, written, and interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, employees, or internal/external clients successfully conveying and exchanging information in a positive manner.
  •      Provides operational oversight and direction of pharmacy staff, ensuring delivery of the highest quality comprehensive patient care.
  •      Provides effective training and guidance to pharmacy interns throughout the course of their work and maintains active monitoring of their job performance.
  •      As a team player demonstrates self-initiative by being aware of your work environment in order to assist co-workers and others while maintaining and enhancing a respectful and positive attitude in the work environment.  Serves at all times as a positive and effective employee role model.

 

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • A Diploma from and accredited College of Pharmacy.

 

If applicable, equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, and must be directly related to the functions and responsibilities of the job.

 

Required Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations:

  • A current Pharmacist License in accordance with the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy requirements.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers.
  • Level I fingerprint clearance card: current valid and in good standing or have applied for it within seven working days after beginning employment
  • Employees in this position may be required to have reliable transportation that can meet any operational reassignments of the organization during the workday.  If an employee is driving during work hours, the employee is required to possess a valid driver’s license and must be in compliance with Arizona vehicle insurance requirements.

 

Preferred Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities:

  • Board Certified by the Board of Pharmacy (Ambulatory Care or Pharmacist Specialist) or Certified Diabetes Educator.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) with the ability to speak, read and write in both languages

 El Rio Health requires all employees (except those 100% working remotely) to have a Level One Fingerprint Clearance card. A.R.S. 36.425.03. If the prospective employee does not possess this prior to hire, fingerprint application must be completed within 7 days post hire. 

 All employees are strongly recommended to obtain Bivalent COVID-19 vaccine, and maintain vaccination status (i.e. boosters as recommended by CDC and/or other public health agencies) to include an Influenza vaccination.

 All employees are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, will be subject to post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal and State regulations for alcohol and controlled substance testing. Employees in positions holding responsibility for the safety and welfare of others will also be classified as safety sensitive.
