GENERAL DESCRIPTION
 
Under general supervision of a Recreation Supervisor, or Division Manager, assists in and performs planning, coordination and supervision of comprehensive recreation programs, events and activities for a Recreation Center; recruits, coordinates and supervises regular, temporary and volunteer staff; and performs related work as required. This position is responsible for overseeing the coordination of athletic leagues.
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED

 
Supervises full time staff, part time staff, seasonal staff, and contract labor.
 
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
 
Provide quality customer service.
 
Supervise recreation staff, contract instructors, athletic league officials, including determining workloads and schedules, effectively evaluating staff and making hiring and disciplinary recommendations.
 
Plan, organize, conduct and coordinate a wide variety of recreational programming and athletic programs, leagues, and tournaments.
 
Prepare a variety of reports and other documents such as operating costs, league revenues, leagues expenses, schedules, practices, activity and statistical reports, promotional materials and other forms of documentation.
 
Maintain contact with neighborhood groups, schools, businesses, law enforcement agencies, volunteer and other community groups and provide necessary coordination of services.
 
Ensure that procedures and rules are followed at the assigned Recreation Center.
 
Communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, parents, coaches, volunteers, officials, and the general public on issues related to the Recreation Division and athletic leagues. Develops and distributes program satisfaction surveys to learn program efficiencies and deficiencies.
 
Coordinates with local high school and college coaches to conduct coaches clinics for youth leagues.
 
Works with Recreation Multimedia Specialists in preparation of publicity regarding athletic programs, brochures, calendars, posters, news releases and flyers.

Knowledge of:
           
Athletic program, administration, operations, and activities.
 
Employee supervision, including work planning, assignments, evaluation and staff development.
 
Scheduling and planning not limited to tournaments, leagues, and sports seasons.
 
First aid practices and techniques; general safety protocol; understanding policies and guidelines for dealing with an emergency.
 
Quick Scores and Active net is preferred.
 
Techniques of planning and directing group, social and recreational activities for various age groups and various skill levels.
 
Objectives of recreation and leisure activities to include organizing and leading groups of people.

Skill to:
           
Plan, assign, schedule and review the work of staff.

Implement and evaluate programs and activities within departmental guidelines.
 

Assess community recreation and athletic league needs.
 

Prepare reports and give presentations.

Communicate and interact effectively with co-workers, managers, subordinates and the general public sufficient to convey information and to receive work direction.
 

Ensure the safety of patrons utilizing our facilities.
 

Operate office equipment, including computer equipment.

Ability to:

Develop a variety of athletic programs and events to meet the community needs.

Work independently and manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.

Respond quickly in an emergency situation; follow and enforce rules; verbally communicate with the public and staff effectively.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

 

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.  Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

 

Experience:
 

Two (2) years of experience in recreation/athletic programming is required.


One (1) year of supervisory experience is required.


Education/Training:


A Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in recreation administration, physical education, leisure activity, or a related field is preferred.


License or Certificate:


A valid Texas driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is preferred.


Special Requirements:


Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:


Ability to work flexible hours including mornings, nights, and weekends.


Work environment includes the possibility of working outdoors in extreme heat and cold.


With or without accommodation, ability to lift, carry, and/or pull up to 40 pounds.


Ability to travel to other work locations.
