For over 125 years, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has been providing quality social services to the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens, and currently offers 160-plus programs and services for children, youth, adults, seniors, and those struggling with mental illness.
Our program helps individuals and families move beyond emergencies to more stable and stronger home lives. COS encompasses the following three components.

  • Health and Wellness Services engages the community in interactive health and wellness workshops, support groups, events and resource fairs that cover daily needs including healthy living, COVID 19 and parenting.
  • Community Outreach Centers (formerly walk in center). Our Outreach Specialists assess the individuals needs and respond with information, resources, and limited financial assistance.
  • Food Resource Services operates a network of 20 food pantries (in partnership with parishes in the Diocese of Brooklyn). Our network helps distribute more than 3 million meals to 300,000 people. Meals include shelf stable items, dairy, meats and fresh produce. STATEMENT OF THE JOB:
The Volunteer Specialist manages the Volunteer Program, part of the Office of Mission at Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens. The Volunteer Specialist’s skills will be used to help promote and sustain a broader understanding of the mission of Catholic Charities among all the communities of Brooklyn and Queens. The Volunteer Specialist will assist with day-to-day activities in the Office of Mission, focusing directly on volunteer management, orientation and coordinating of volunteer opportunities.
•    Working with individuals and groups to create personalized opportunities
•    Facilitating volunteer orientations to the Witness of Mercy program in Brooklyn and Queens
•    Attend volunteer events to troubleshoot as needed
•    Follow-up with active volunteers on their current volunteer experience
•    Coordinating the University of Scranton Day of Service and St. John’s University Service Day
•    This opportunity requires some evening and weekends, dependent on group opportunities
•    Maintain an active presence with the CCUSA Volunteer Section Network
•    Work collaboratively with the Office of Mission Coordinator 
•    Follow-up with volunteers who contact the office via email, website and telephone 
•    Updating the volunteer website with current volunteer opportunities
•    Scheduling background checks for potential volunteers with Human Resources
•    Collect volunteer hours from programs with volunteers
•    Use the database, Donor Perfect, to record volunteer information, including logging hours
•    To coordinate volunteer events and service projects.
•    Coordinate corporate and school days of service.
•    Scheduling background checks for potential on-going volunteers with Human Resources
•    Assist in Office of Mission events and other departmental tasks as needed
•    Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
•    Bachelor’s Degree in related field. 
•    Valid driver's license preferred, proof of department of motor vehicles driving history, 3 years of current driving experience with no more than one moving violation in the previous 24 months (2 years), and no driving while intoxicated convictions
•    Access to  a car preferred
•    3-5 years’ experience in outreach to the elderly and/or homebound.
•    3-5 years working with parish volunteers. 
•    Bilingual English/Spanish, English/Arabic, English/Cantonese/Mandarin, and/or English/ Russian preferred
•    Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
•    Able to travel to multiple locations within the five boroughs as needed.
