Peak Adventures’ purpose is to kindle personal growth, leadership, and connections through experiences in the outdoors.
 

ASI’s Peak Adventures is an outdoor adventure program dedicated to getting Sac State Students outside. Peak Adventures provides guided outdoor trips, low cost gear rentals, full service bike repair at The Bike Shop, summer youth camps and team building at The Challenge Center.

SUMMARY: The Outdoor Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for the daily operations of Explorer and/or Summit Camp. Counselors are responsible for the safety, instruction, and participation of campers in outdoor activities including but not limited to canoeing, rock climbing, hiking, and white water rafting.
 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Safely perform job duties and follow risk management procedures

• Maintain safe conditions and environments at all times for all campers

• Oversee and make decisions about risk management in the field in alignment with standard operating procedures.

• Oversight of 6 – 10 campers per week.

• Demonstrate proficiency in outdoor activities which include but not limited to flat water canoeing, rock climbing, top rope anchor setting and hiking.

• Teach and practice Leave No Trace (LNT).

• Oversee group dynamics of the campers and managing group cohesion.

• Maintain camper behavior, discipline and enforcing consequences.

• Assist raft guides with set up and white water instruction

• Lead & facilitate games.

• Take pictures throughout camp week.

• Communicate with parents regarding camper behavior

• Belay participants on some climbing elements at the Peak Adventures Challenge Center.

• Clean-up and maintain camp equipment and supplies.

• Daily check-in and check-out of campers.

• Communicate needs and daily events with the Outdoor Adventure Manager

• Show up and attend all scheduled workdays on time

• Attend mandatory trainings that include duties related to the position.

• Operation of a 12-passenger van.

• Perform safety inspection on assigned vehicle to be used. Notify supervisor of any vehicle deficiencies. Follow all California State Rules and Regulations surrounding vehicle operation.

• Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Enrolled in a minimum of 6 units at Sacramento State; maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA overall (for Student Assistant incumbents)

• High School Diploma and 18 years of age

• Complete Peak Adventures New Hire Orientation

• Must complete the Peak Adventures 5-day Summer Camp Training

• CPR Certification (On-line certification not accepted)

• First Aid Certification (On-line certification not accepted)

• Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Certification

• Currently hold a driver’s license

• Obtain a Class C Driver’s License with a Passenger Endorsement prior to start of Camp

• Meet ASI driving requirements

• Ability to work Monday – Friday 7:00AM – 6:00PM
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience working with youth

• Experience with outdoor activities including canoeing, rock climbing, hiking and rafting

• Experience with top-rope anchor building for outdoor rock climbing

• Experience leading games & facilitating activities

• Belay experience

• Water safety skills

• Experience managing groups and leading group activities

• Experience with risk management and safety implementation

• Wilderness First responder (WFR) or higher
 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to fingers, handle, feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee must:

• Frequently, lift and/or move up to 60 pounds or 100 pounds assisted.

• Must be able to climb, kneel, squat, reach overhead

• Must be able to travel on uneven surfaces

• Must be able to work for up to 12 hours with high level of focus

• Must be able to operate a vehicle and drive in a variety of weather conditions

• Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time

• Must be able to meet minimum physical requirements for individual activities
 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

• Outdoors exposed to rain, heat and cold temperature for up to 10 hours a day
