Description & Basis for Role:

An integral part of a strong corporate pressure relief device program is the establishment and

maintenance of a pressure relief device steward role for each site. The role has four key responsibilities: Daily work, minor projects, long-term efforts, and personal development & mentorship. The time requirement for this role can vary from 50 – 100% depending on the ongoing relief device related projects and efforts, and the remainder will provide technical support to the operating areas.It is a safety-critical function and should always have priority over other assigned project work.A key aspect of the PRD steward role is keeping the status of relief devices and their activities up-to-date so that maintenance of this information is not affected by employee turnover.

The four key responsibilities can be defined as:

Daily Work

• Daily Maintenance of the Site Master PRD List

– Update status entries for devices during the day as needed. Note new work being planned or

initiated, sizing packages being created or completed, add newly planned PRDs, delete PRDs

removed from service, etc.

• Day-to-Day PRD Support/Troubleshooting Activities

– Help evaluate newly identified overpressure scenarios, assist with code interpretations, help

answer whether a PRD set point can be changed, etc.

Minor Projects*

• Update Existing PRD Sizing Packages As Needed

– New plant installations or modifications may trigger the need for additional overpressure

scenarios or updated sizing calculations

• Prepare New PRD Sizing Packages As Needed

• Track and Support PRD revalidation and remediation efforts*

• Assist corporate relief device discipline owner with preparation of site PRD metrics for quarterly

report outs

*Initially, this will be the primary responsibility of the role – there is a large project focused on bringing the site’s PSV program into compliance, and an aggressive expectation has been set by the business for project completion. The PSV Steward will be the primary owner and driver of this project.

Long-Term Efforts

• Strengthen and maintain a communication culture between engineers, reliability, piping designers,

project managers, and the PSM group

– Engineers should notify the site PRD steward of any engineering work, installations, or

modifications that may affect relief device sizing.

– Maintain open lines of communication with reliability to ensure that relief devices with correct

specifications and functionality are purchased.

– PRD piping installations or modification plans should be reviewed with the site PRD steward

before finalizing to ensure code compliance.

– Ensure that dispersion modeling is screened for and completed for relief device discharges as

Personal Development and Mentorship

• Stay Up to Date on Relief Device Standards and Codes

• Train site process engineers on relief device sizing and documentation

• Actively seek support and mentorship from the corporate relief device discipline owner

• Gain expertise in relief sizing software, dispersion modeling, or other knowledge related to relief

devices as part of yearly goals and objectives

• Participate in technical forum among the other site PRD stewards and the corporate discipline owner

Role Fulfillment/Candidate Recommendation:

The responsibilities and criticality of the PSV Steward role necessitate that the candidate be able to perform at an Engineer 3 level or above.The requirements of that level specific to the role are as stated:

oRegularly depended on in one or more areas of expertise with depth of knowledge in related field (i.e. – PSV design, sizing and applicable regulatory codes) and breadth of knowledge in general fields

oIdentifies issues and areas for improvement with existing technical processes, either independently or through cross-functional teams (i.e. – reliability, operations, maintenance)

Qualifications

·Requirements:

oBachelor’s degree in chemical/mechanical engineering or equivalent

oSix Sigma Green Belt certified
