Position Summary

This position is part of the Westmoreland Engineer Development Program (EDP) which offers an exciting opportunity to explore the main functions of Westmoreland’s mining operations. Successful candidate will complete a series of 8 to 12-month rotations through mine departments of Production, Maintenance, and Engineering over the course of 2 to 3 years. Each rotation will be accomplished at distinct mine sites providing a candidate the unique experience of interacting and learning from different properties and staff over the course of the program. Under direct supervision, applies standard engineering techniques to design, analyze, test,

maintain, repair, or improve products, components, or assemblies.

Supervisor Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities over other employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare mine plans and engineering designs.
  • Perform monthly evaluations of productivity and economics of mine areas.
  • Update geological models, design and layout mine passes, and forecast mine progression.
  • Design haul roads, ramps, pond drainages, and dragline accesses.
  • Evaluate purchase and use of mining equipment and mining methods.
  • Perform FAS 143 Studies, Reserve Studies and coordinate the Annual Operating Budget.
  • Carry out responsible and varied engineering assignments which require a general familiarity with a broad spectrum of the engineering field.
  • Oversee field operations to ensure production goals align with mine plans.
  • Direct daily maintenance activities.
  • Perform related work as required.

Typical Physical Demands

Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching.Requires constant data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires mobility sufficient to travel.

Typical Working Conditions

Normal office environment and field work in typical weather. Occasional evening or weekend work. Occasional offsite travel may be necessary depending on assigned duties.Working on-call, nights and weekends may occasionally be required on an as needed basis.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field from an accredited university.
  • No related work experience required.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

  • EIT/FE preferred.
