The Geospatial Services Intern will be responsible for completing field work to improve the accuracy of GIS layers maintained by PWSA, operating and maintaining associated hardware and software, assisting with the review of GPS data collected by or submitted to the organization, and updating GIS layers to reflect spatially verified locations.

RESPONSIBILITIES
● Complete field data collection of water, wastewater and stormwater assets throughout the PWSA system utilizing GNSS receivers paired with ESRI’s Field Maps application.  (Training provided)
● Operate and maintain survey grade GPS (global positioning system) equipment. 
● Operate and maintain GPR (ground penetrating radar) equipment to field locate and assess underground infrastructure and conditions.
● Utilize GIS layers, maps, and web and mobile applications to collect and review GPS data.
● Assist with reviewing GPS data collected by both PWSA staff and external organizations.
● Adjust the spatial location of GIS features to corresponding GPS-verified coordinates and complete feature attribute updates in ArcGIS Pro and/or other associated software.
● Provide updates at team and departmental meetings to communicate the status of assigned project work.
● Other duties as assigned.

● Ability to troubleshoot technical issues in the field.
● Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports/correspondence.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements list the minimum education/training/experience required to qualify for this job. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be accepted.
●Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in GIS, Geography, Engineering, or a related field.
●Basic Knowledge of GPS hardware and software and ESRI ArcGIS tools is strongly preferred.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicant must present a current, valid Class C (Class 1) Motor Vehicle Operator’s License at the time of application or prior to appointment.  A valid driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment.
Applicant must have permanent residency in Allegheny County at the time of appointment and remain a permanent resident throughout employment with the PWSA.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED / RECEIVED
No direct reports / Receives supervision directly from the Geospatial Services Coordinator.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands of this position consist of walking, hiking, and/or driving between assets with all pertinent equipment, including the ability to lift and leverage 50 lbs., stand, stoop, reach, walk, and/or climb in areas that may include uneven terrain, steep hillsides, waterways/creeks, remote areas, heavily traveled roadways, commercial areas, secured locations, and residential properties.

CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to urban and rugged environments and all weather conditions and is subject to remain on duty beyond normal hours or during emergency situations or other extensive periods.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION
Employment may be contingent upon the results of a post-offer (initial employment or promotion) physical examination performed by the Authority's examining physician.

DRUG TESTING
Employment may be contingent upon the results of a post-offer (initial employment or promotion) drug screening. Continued employment may be subject to drug, and alcohol testing conducted without advance notice and without individualized suspicion.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
Ability to successfully pass a thorough investigation consisting of a criminal history check, verification of prior employment and performance, reference, and credentials checks, and in some cases credit history.
